The Spencer Davis Group

The Spencer Davis Group are a British rock band formed in Birmingham in 1963 by guitarist Spencer Davis, keyboardist Steve Winwood, his brother, base guitarist Muff Winwood, and drummer Pete York^[1]. Their best known songs include UK chart-topping covers of Jackie Edwards' "Somebody Help Me" and "Keep on Running", "I'm a Man", and "Gimme Some Lovin'", which reached #2 in the UK and #7 in the US^[2].

After releasing three albums, Steve and Muff Winwood left the group in 1967. Steve would form Traffic, join Blind Faith, and become a solo artist (eventually recording songs like "Higher Love")^[1], while Muff joined Island Records as an A&R man. The brothers were replaced with guitarist Phil Sawyer and keyboardist/vocalist Eddie Hardin. This lineup recorded the 1968 album With Their New Face On before Hardin and York left to form the duo Hardin & York. York was first replaced with Dave Hynes, then with future Elton John Band member Nigel Olsson. Hardin was replaced with future Elton John Band bassist Dee Murray. This lineup released the U.S.-exclusive album Funky in 1969 before the group disbanded.

The Spencer Davis Group briefly reunited in 1973 with Davis, Fenwick, Hardin, York, and bassist Charlie McCracken. This incarnation released two albums before disbanding in 1974. In 2006 Davis re-formed the band as a touring act, though the U.S. and Europe have differing line-ups^[3]. Hardin toured with the European version until his death in 2015^[4].
