Whoever keeps changing the Meena tag to "Fatty", please stop. It's very rude to Meena. And unnecessary.
Does anyone want to make a page for that Gazelle receptionist from Sing 2? I think her name might be Karen if you look close on her name tag.

I think Sing should get a show, with such a large cast of characters with such a tight relationship a show is a very good way to properly show their character and relationships. There could be episodes focused mostly on one character so we can see and learn more about them.
A good example of what I think we'd want here is Dragons: Race to the Edge. It is a show for a movie franchise with a similar-sized cast. It gives dedicated episodes to all of the characters and plenty of time to their relationships and watching the movies after having seen the show makes you love and appreciate each character more.
I hope Illumination would consider making a show for the franchise, even if it is only a season with one episode per character it would be great to see.
In this post I'll share my thoughts and theories about the symbolism behind the songs the main protagonists sing on their final performance, in both movies! (Obviously, there will be spoilers for Sing 2, so skip that section if you haven't watched the movie.)
If you want to share your own thoughts and points of view, feel free to do so in the comments!
Now, without further ado, let's start with the first movie:
- Rosita (and Gunter) with "Shake it Off": By the title only, it's easy to see that it's about Rosita finally finding the fire inside her and starting to "shake it off", showing her true potential to everyone, especially her husband and children. Also, the lyrics "Can't stop, won't stop moving" and "It's like I got this music in my mind" symbolizes the scene where Rosita was dancing in the market, where she first found her passion while dancing to "Bamboleo".
- Johnny with "I'm Still Standing": Even though this is a breakup song, Johnny's story arc ISN'T about that and/or romance at all; instead, it's about his relationship with his father. He's "still standing" despite everything he went through (aka "after all this time"), including his father hurting him and denying him as his son. He tries his best to move on without his father ("pickin' up the pieces of my life without you on my mind"), until they reconcile later on. This song also works for Ash, since her story arc HAD a romance and a breakup, but she's still standing and is ready to move on from her toxic relationship (hence why we see her getting ready while Johnny is still singing).
- Ash with "Set It All Free": Ash wrote that song by herself, and through the lyrics she talks about being too much in love with Lance to realize he was underestimating her and her talent ("blurry and blind"); when he cheated on her, though, she could "finally see" his true colors. And now, nothing is "keeping her down", and she's ready to shine and reveal her talent to the world ("my scars gonna shine brighter than your sun").
- Mike with "My Way": To quote CinemaWins, "That song kills anyone who sings it". Yeah yeah, I know not all of you think that Mike is actually dead, then again, this song is about a man (or in this case, a mouse), who "faces the final curtain", feeling "the end is near". He also sings about living "a life that's full", and did everything "his way", with a few regrets. And we very well saw Mike living his life to the fullest, taking very dangerous decisions not only for him, but also for the other characters in the movie; however, his personality never changes even after all the damage he caused, showing he doesn't regret his life choices. Coming back to the death part, this song CAN hint that Mike actually dies, then again we don't know a character's certain fate until we actually see it, so you can also consider he escaped and left the city with his girlfriend, being on the run. Either way, the "final curtain" can also be implied as Mike's "final curtain" in the franchise, since we don't see him for the rest of the movie, and he's not in the sequel. (Unless there is a third movie in the future and he somehow returns to that.)
- Meena with "Don't you Worry About a Thing": Okay, I was thinking to go with the title only, saying that it's just about Meena stopping worrying and overcoming her stage fright, but I decided to look up the lyrics, and there is more to that song than meets the eye. Starting with the lyrics "Everybody's got a thing", "But some don't know how to handle it" and "Always reachin' out in vain", they symbolize Meena's singing talent, who didn't know how to handle it because of her stage fright, and she was reaching in vain when she was failing to perform in front of an audience. Next, the lyrics "'Cause I'll be standin' on the side" and "When you check it out", possibly talk about her family (and possibly herself) supporting her singing talent, being joined by the rest of the main characters later on (including Mike, who seemed to finally appreciate Meena's talent before he was snatched by the Bears). Finally, the lyrics "Everybody needs a change" and "A chance to check out the new", are about Meena becoming more confident (aka changing) and experiencing what is like singing in front of the audience (aka check out the new).
Now, moving on to the second movie! (WARNING: SPOILERS!)
- Johnny with "A Sky Full of Stars": Johnny performs a romantic song, yet his story arc once again ISN'T about romance at all. This time it's about Klaus underestimating him and draining his confidence. Notice how the first lyric he sings to Klaus when he gets up after being beaten is "I don't care if you tear me apart": he clearly says to Klaus that no matter how much he throws him down (both literally and figuratively), he will always get up, not caring about being torn apart. This eventually leads to Johnny overpowering Klaus and earning his respect.
- Porsha with "Could Have Been Me": If you've watched the movie, then it's easy to guess what this song is about, since you've also seen the related scene: with the lyrics "I can't hear you, I won't fear you now", Porsha stood up to her father, who only cared about his image when she was "fired" from the show rather than his own daughter. This post is already long, so I won't analyze every lyric further, so just know that most of the lyrics symbolize Porsha's story arc, her relationship with her father, and not needing to be perfect to keep his image solid.
- Meena (and Darius turned to Alfonso) with "I Say a Little Prayer": Once again, I decided to look up the lyrics for this song, but this time I didn't find a whole lot. First things first, it's obviously a love song, and Meena's story arc is about her falling in love for the first time. I believe the reason this song is picked (instead of, well, ANY love song), is because the lyrics indirectly symbolize Meena thinking of Alfonso so much all the time (maybe even praying for him), that she even used him in her imagination to sing a duet with Darius. That's it, pretty much, I'm afraid I can't think of anything more, so feel free to let me know if you have something more than that.
- Rosita (and Gunter) with "Break Free": Again by the title only, you can see that the song is about Rosita getting over her fear of heights and "breaking free" from it, doing an outstanding performance (and saving Buster, whose falling was that urged her to jump and rescue him). This is also implied by the lyrics "Now that I've become who I really am" and "I'm stronger than I've been before".
- Ash and Clay Calloway with "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For": I will admit this was the toughest one, especially since I've never heard of this song before I watched the movie (quick fact, every song "written" by Calloway is originally performed by U2, so they're not original movie songs). Anyway, I believe this song is mostly about Clay rather than Ash, which was kind of disappointing for me since in the last movie there was an ORIGINAL song symbolizing her arc; in this movie she doesn't have that because she is mostly connected to Clay's story arc. Anyway, back to analyzing the song, since Clay "wrote" all his songs for his wife, it's easy to say that it's dedicated to his love for her, yet there is something more to that specific song. It symbolizes what Clay went through after losing his wife, struggling through pain and isolation, and he couldn't find his passion for singing again ("But I still haven't found what I'm looking for"), until Ash helped him. That's all I could make out of this song, I'm not sure if there is something more.
Since we're getting two mini movies from the Sing 2 Blu-Ray, I have a few ideas on some plots for them.
Miss Crawly trying to find something fancy to wear with Porsha's help.
Meena on her first official virtual date with Alfonso.
Gunter setting up a romantic dinner date for Norman and Rosita's anniversary.
Johnny teaching Nooshy how to drive.
Clay having to deal with annoying animals while out on a walk.
Sing 2 opened a lot of possibilities for another Sing movie. But what about a Sing TV show or TV specials? Quite possibly. So I want to see your ideas for Sing episodes or Sing specials.
